I was in Kuching last weekend to give a talk and also conduct a workshop. It’s been a long time since I visited this city and it all seems so different to me now.
So I spent a day with 10 photographers, teaching them about photojournalism and how to approach subjects. We started off with theory and lecture in the classroom. I taught them what photojournalism is about, how to plan and visualize ahead of time. Prepared them for what to expect when shooting people. Then we went out and shot for almost 5 hours. It rained a little so we all got a bit wet. Here’s some highlights of the pictures I created:
A garbage sweeper works in front of the Electra House, a popular shopping destination in Kuching.
Local residents hang out near a jetty.
Two men being playful while the other just pretends not to know…
Boatmen waits for passengers along the river.
A boatman paddles his boat while waiting for passengers to arrive.
A merchant on Main Bazaar street sells books and various Islamic posters.
A man carries his child on his shoulders as they walk into a narrow alley at the Main Bazaar in Kuching.
Pedestrians walk past an entrance to the oldest mosque in Kuching, Masjid India.
Boxes of ikan bilis on sale on Main Bazaar street in Kuching.
A blind female beggar sits in front of a closed shophouse while pedestrians walk by on the Main Bazaar street.
Three women share an umbrella as they walk in the rain towards the High Courthouse in Kuching.
Tourists take pictures of themselves with the famous cats in downtown Kuching city.
A contractor paints colors to a carved wall at a chinese temple in Kuching.
Workers are silhouetted against the sky as they go about their tasks in Kuching.
At the end of the shoot, we headed back to the classroom and reviewed some images. Then I gave out certificates to each participant. Overall, they were happy and learnt a lot from this outing. I enjoyed sharing too and I look forward to giving another workshop again soon.
