The “Thinking Photographer”

There is a big difference between a Photographer and a Thinking Photographer. What makes them different is when you look at the pictures produced by the latter, you can see that there was considerable thought processes going through the photographer’s mind before clicking the shutter.

And it shows in the images because they are not merely snapshots but they were composed and lit with considerable thought. A Thinking Photographer thinks a lot about composition, lighting, timing, focal length, shutter speed, aperture, and a whole lot more before he presses the shutter to capture an image.

This approach in capturing pictures is clearly visible in his images because his images are well thought of, and not just snapshots. And this is the first step to becoming a pro or should I say the first step to improving one’s level of photography and also the right path to creating your own style and also the way to stand out among the norm.

I’ve always believed in “creating” images, rather than just “taking” images. And to achieve that, you have to think about all the elements I’ve mentioned before the shutter is clicked. And to be able to perform at this level, you have to be a master in the technicalities of your camera. You can’t be thinking what will this aperture do or what will happen if I shoot at this shutter speed… you need to know all this like the back of your hand.

So in a nutshell, the Thinking Photographer is one who has mastered the basics and technicalities of photography. The Thinking Photographer is one who is constantly thinking of different ways to create images and different ways to tell a story. Because a picture tells a thousand words.. and the Thinking Photographer is always striving to tell it in his own way that is different and unique to his own style and personality.. and walking his own path.

This is how you can transform your journey from a newbie in photography to a professional in what you do.

Well said Jimin. Strongly agrees with your statement.
I’ve met with photographers who click practically at everything… so trigger free!
They even went to the extend of giving photography discourses to others on the spot! pheewww! (pengsan)
