On Photojournalism..

I’ve often wondered.. how many people in Malaysia are interested in Photojournalism? We all know there are hundreds if not thousands of people interested in wedding photography and portraiture but what is the percentage of people here that are interested in Photojournalism?

I think the photography scene in Malaysia needs to be more balanced out with various forms of photography and not just mainly focused on weddings and portraits. I really would like to see more people interested in telling stories of people’s lives, of a community, religion, culture, etc..

We need to bring up the level and increase the penetration of photojournalism in our market.

But really.. do people know and understand what photojournalism is about? Here’s my definition: “Photojournalism is the art of telling stories with photographs.”  It’s all about telling the story.. of people’s lives, places,.. of humanity and the world we live in. There are many, many stories out there, even in your own back yard, or your own little neighborhood.

The reason I got attracted to photojournalism was because of the incredibly deep and interesting stories that can be told with photographs that are impactful, that stay in the viewers minds for a long, long time. People always remember a photograph that is impactful, dramatic, that tells an incredible story. Remember LIFE Magazine? (If you’re old enough, you’d remember) Remember National Geographic? (Somehow I feel the images back then were better than the ones published now, or maybe it’s because i’ve grown in my own level of photography that they are not as impactful to me now than it was back then.)

I would like to see unforgettable images of our country, our people, our own stories.. taken by our own photographers. Everyone out there who has an interest in Photojournalism, please make a comment below as a sign to show that you support Photojournalism and would like to see it grow in Malaysia. And maybe I’ll organize more photojournalism events and get togethers.. :)

I’m with you on your say on photojournalism, whereby the stories are told by the depth of the photographs captured, thru the very own eye of the photographer. As much as fine art photography attracts my attention, I think a good, impactful photo, telling stories through the frame is equally interesting as well.

I’m with you & i love doing this but not very active due local photojournalist sometime not welcome by local people as they prefer tourist more.(I sokong Hanif statement).Anyhow I will do its step by step(slowly lah..).

I agree… Wedding photography is just too overrated and most photogs do it coz of its money making opportunities…

And to Hanif and Awang, You really need to get out and just be thick-skinned to take really good photos… Went for Jimin’s workshop a couple of weeks back and trust me, I only got shunned once… Not in any severe way, just a polite gesture that the guy was uncomfortable…Nothing else… Been doing it ever since his workshop and not a rejection to date…

Thanks Jimin!

Hope to hang out with you some time soon for a Teh Tarik or something! Haha! Till then, Ciao si botak!

I like Photojournalism because of the way it tells the story independently of the scene, people, culture, etc etc. Instead of art, I look at photos as a method of recording. Record moments, incidents, places, historical buildings and faces. And also, I like the fact that Photojournalism brings awareness to the people as well.

Jimin, I would love to learn photojournalism so that people would look at my work in terms of how much impact they can interpret, see what I see and feel the emotions that I felt when I click the shutter instead of talking about the picture quality, colour, composition, bokeh or other technical photographic terms.

Cheers~

While many of my friends were just talking about the stray dog rescue effort at Pulau Ketam, I’m already going my part as an amateur photojournalist, documenting it by being attached to a volunteer team. I’m into photojournalism because it is a powerful to change perceptions or spread awareness. It is a needed tool help create a better world.

I got my first taste of photojournalism by following Jimin after the short workshop at CM a few weeks back. I’d love to learn more. I’m wary of joining forums and hobbyist groups delving in this branch of photography, as it could be a case of the blind leading the blind.
I believe many are interested in photojournalism, but perhaps, locally, there are not many practitioners willing to share or impart their knowledge.
I do hope your “maybe” will be a reality.

Chris says: 24 May 2009 - 10:26 pm

Like Roziah, I was at the workshop too but myself, I found it strange on my end to attempt photojournalism since I’m so used to private sessions. I remember LIFE magazine, and I have always loved those b&w photos – I still have an anniversary hardcover book of LIFE, a collection of their best pics. That should be a good motivator. I’ll keep shooting to work up my courage and help contribute in this area. Thanks for showing us the “way”, Jimin.

I’m with Hanif, am personally interested in photojournalism style photography but find it very difficult to approach and make contact with subjects and have them willingly participate in a shot. Would definitely be keen on any workshops you might organize!

I have recently only gotten interested in photography, and find photojournalism to be a very deep and dynamic art form. I’m constantly amazed by the stories which can be told with just one picture, which captures the emotions and atmosphere of the occasion. I’d definitely by interested in the techniques

I think I speak alot of minds here: I find all kinds of living stories around me, but I was too shy or afraid or maybe ignorant of getting myself into part of their life…

Journalism student here, with a knack (I hope!) for photography!

Im in for photojournalism. Photos must be compelling and impactful in telling a story.

KT Teh says: 28 May 2009 - 11:19 am

Totally agreed with what you all have been comment above. I love photojournalism. I can stare at at newspaper photo for more than 10 minutes to read all the stories they told. Aljazeera.net photo is one of my favourite photojournalism

Jimin, its a pleasure to read this posts, to know that PJ is still lingering in your mind, after so much conversion in your life. I am devoted to PJ, and never will change my path, as i am deeply believe its one of the greatest tools to express myself, and far more important, to tell stories, that lingers under the radar.

“I would like to see unforgettable images of our country, our people, our own stories.. taken by our own photographers”

I agree with jimin wholeheartedly, and, we need to gain more knowledge, and more exposures so that we can understand better about the things that we photograph..especially when it comes to our homeland.

Interesting post Jimin, make me thinking and not to forget the kind of impact photo by photojournalist presented to us…

Jerry says: 8 June 2009 - 10:09 pm

Jimin, I agree with U on this topic, and looking forward to see u again this coming conference in Kuching. 12-15 june.

Lee says: 9 June 2009 - 12:53 pm

I agree with Jimin. For me photography is about lives. And it starts with our own. Too many people are just concern about pretty pictures. Nothing wrong with that. But not many are attracted or by meaningful and impactful pictures. I guess it will all boil down to one thing at the end. Is the photographer interested in the lives of others. Or is he/she just a shiok sendiri instant gratification sort. Then I don’t think that photojournalism is their cup of tea.

jiminlai says: 9 June 2009 - 7:23 pm

Yeah see you in Kuching 12-15 June!! Thanks for all the great comments and please keep them coming!

no problem bro.. :)

I think to grow to the next level of photography and in this case, photojournalism, there needs to be a development of a photographer’s worldview, philosophy and mindset. Somehow, there’s more depth to a picture from a thinking photographer. I’m not sure how a photojournalist’s intuitions are developed exactly and if they need empathy for their subjects before being able to capture something extraordinary or what thoughts go into making a compelling photo. Maybe this might be an area for exploration.

hanif says: 28 June 2009 - 1:52 pm

saya sapot! hmm..can u share on where can we tell our stories? maybe our own malaysian version of national geographic kan..

Azren Ahmad says: 2 July 2009 - 1:16 am

Hi all,
I’m still beginner in photography….finding my own skill in photography but likely to interested with photojournalism coz u need more studies with the subject especially when we talk about religion or community. That very sensitivity with our people like hanif and other people talk. Silap2 kena masuk ISA!!!hehehe
By the way i seriously supported with photojournalism…we growth up with our own stories and our own skill!!!!your are telling people of the true color life in your picture.
One more problem why people more comfortable with wedding photography or fashion photography coz u no need to write the story of your picture….maybe you just write down the detail of picture but actually it’s nothing to tell.
Hope your can share your experience and skill to us…..best wishes!!! JiminLai

There’s always a story behind another story..the same goes with the images in a photograph. Each image will have a story to tell which will then tail on to another story. The place and time of an image captured will have its own story to tell and finally it will end up to the story behind the camera with which the image was taken and will tail on to the story of the photographer. Even behind this short line that I am writing has its own story to tell.. Well, it does sound a bit scary but that’s how life goes… and I guess the same goes with photojournalism..

Jimmin, like how you adore MJ, I just love the work that you are doing. Your captures are not just captures. They are powerful captures with a series of very strong stories to tell which leads to the stories of your cameras and about yourself as well. I normally spend a lot of time just looking at the images in your captures trying to figure out the stories behind the image captured by you..

Don’t stop Jimmin… just keep on doing what you are doing.. ther are so many guys with you.. I, for sure, am definitely with you although I don’t respond much to your talks and get togethers. Perhaps one day we will meet and have our own stories to tell.. just like photojournalism.. it does not stop with just an image captured.. it goes on and on and on and on.. when or where does it stop? I guess it never stops….

Hi Jimin Lai. Of all the photography areas i am really interested in photojournalism.I have a habit of looking at pics or photos and start dwelling in it,creating an imagination or trying to put myself in the picture. The story that comes up may not be entirely true, but i strongly believe in the saying that a photo can tell thousands of words.

So yes,i support photojournalism. And i am thinking of being one too ;) Any advice on where to start?
