How about crossing over to the “Dark Side?”
I have to confess… ever since the launch of the Nikon D700, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking.. “Should I jump over to the Dark Side?” Actually my first SLR was a Nikon and I started my photography journey with Nikon. I had my dad’s FG20, then I bought the FM2, and ultimately swapped it for an F3HP with motordrive. The F3 was the camera I used during my initial period working for The Star.
Why am I thinking of this? Simply because these are my criteria for a Digital SLR:
1. Full Frame
2. Light weight
3. Fast focusing
4. Fast shutter speed
5. High resolution and quality
6. Able to shoot at high ISOs with no noise
And the Nikon D700 meets all my criteria.. So that’s why.
But Canon may be launching 1 or 2 new bodies.. a 5D MK2, or maybe like rumours say.. a 3D and 7D. Who knows..?
There is another advantage of jumping over to Nikon.. and that is CLS. With CLS I don’t have to friggin bother about buying pocket wizards, or mini wizards. I can use studio lights combining with Nikon flash lights. I can use multiple flashes without any hassles of buying extra accessories or triggers. Why can’t Canon flashes use radio frequencies instead of infra-red??
Oh yeah, one more thing about the new Nikons.. Active D-Lighting. I shot an assignment a few months ago with the D3, and I was impressed with Active D-Lighting. It helps to retain detail in the shadows and highlights. So there’s actually 2 features that Nikon has over Canon.
Also I like the idea of having a built-in pop up flash with the D700, because I think it would come in handy and I don’t have to mount a full-sized flash on top of the camera all the time.
So, I’m still contemplating.. and I am seriously contemplating. Should I wait and see what Canon has to offer in the next few months? Or should I just dump Canon and join forces with Nikon, which actually was how I started in photography. From my experience, Nikon lenses are so much sharper, and their built is more solid. It has always been the case since film days.
I still have no idea when the D700 will be available in Malaysia. So I still have to wait. Let me contemplate over this… Is it a no brainer or should I wait for the new Canons?
Don’t get me wrong, the Canon 5D is superb, with amazing quality photos, but.. it’s a bit sloww on the focusing and shutter speed.
Anyone wants to trade Nikon gear for my Canon 5D, 24mm f2.8, 35mm f2, 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.8??
